Blake Coleman reveals what the Flames' mindset is with Johnny Gaudreau possibly departing
For the Calgary Flames and ''Johnny Hockey'', they could be coming to a fork in the road, with Johnny Gaudreau looking to cash in on perhaps his last chance at a major money contract and the Flames debating where to go from here after missing the playoffs last year, and being upset by an inferior Edmonton Oilers team this year, washing out in round 2.
For first-year Flame Blake Coleman, his perspective is that it might be time for the players to step in and try to influence Gaudreau's decision this offseason by pumping his tires about the legacy he could leave behind, going down in history as one of the greatest Flames players of all time, should he re-sign in Calgary.
While players often don't get involved in other players' negotiations, Coleman acknowledges that there are times where you stay out of it and times where you don't. So how does Coleman feel about trying to convince a teammate to maybe take a little less than what is available on the open market to stay with the team?
"If it's Johnny Gaudreau you do."
Coleman and the Flames would certainly not be able to replace a player of Gaudreau's caliber in free agency. A 115-point player is not exactly common, so Coleman probably has the right idea by trying to get into Johnny Hockey's head and tug on his heartstrings a bit.
