Blake Wheeler no longer captain of the Winnipeg Jets

The Winnipeg Jets have made a surprising move on Friday, announcing that the team has stripped Blake Wheeler of the captaincy and will enter the 2022-23 season without a dedicated captain.

The announcement was made by the Jets' PR account on Twitter and included a statement that mentioned that the team will enter the 2022-23 season with a collection of alternate captains. Those alternates are yet to be determined, but it would not be surprising to see both Wheeler and Scheifele remaining among that group.

The Jets are coming into this season with a brand new head coach, with veeran bench boss Rick Bowness taking over behind the bench. As you might recall, former Jets head coach Paul Maurice stepped down from his position early last season due to his belief that it was time for a new voice in the room.

Both Bowness and former captain Blake Wheeler are expected to speak with the media this afternoon.
