Both Kasperi Kapanen and Blues GM Doug Armstrong comment on his legal issue in Finland
Yesterday afternoon, it was reported by a Finnish media outlet that former Leaf Kasperi Kapenen was under investigation for aggravated drunk driving in Finland. Kapanen's case was already put before a district court in late August with it set to go to a hearing in February next year. Later yesterday, both Kapanen and Blues President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Doug Armstrong released statements about the situation.
"Last month I made an unacceptable error in judgement and take full responsibility for my actions. I offer my apologies to my family, the Blues organization, my teammates, and the fans. I understand the severity of my mistake and am committed to doing everything I can to earn back their trust." - Kapanen on his legal issue in Finland
Following discussions with Kapanen and his agent, Armstrong released the following statement:
"Today we became aware of the incident involving Kasperi and I have spoken with him and his agent. We are disappointed in his lapse of judgement and are entrusting him to make the necessary changes to avoid putting himself in a similar situation in the future." - Armstrong on Kapanen
This whole thing is reminiscent of the Auston Matthews underwear incident back in 2019 in that Kapanen, like Matthews, did not report the incident to the team. Instead the team found out after the fact, which made everything worse. Obviously, Matthews has bounced back from it. Hopefully Kapanen can do the same.
The 27-year-old Kapanen is entering the final year of his 2-year deal that he signed with Pittsburgh last off-season and is coming off of a 15-goal, 34-point season split between Pittsburgh and St. Louis.
