The news comes at a very tough time for the Jets' organization, as they are already facing a lot of uncertainty surrounding their current forward group. Center Pierre-Luc Dubois, a restricted free agent, has already informed the team that he will not sign a deal with them this summer and will go to free agency next summer. In addition, the Jets also have Mark Scheifele coming into the last year of his current deal. He doesn't appear likely to re-sign either.
Hellebuyck will have no shortage of suitors if the Jets officially put him on their trading block. The 30-year-old netminder is still within his prime window and is an absolute game-changer for a team on the cusp of contending for a Stanley Cup.
Hellebuyck is entering the final year of his current contract, which carries a $6.16M cap hit. He played 64 games for the Jets this season, racking up a 37-25-2 record, a 2.49 GAA and a .920 SV% during the regular season. He had a less-than-ideal postseason run this year, losing in 5 games to the Vegas Golden Knights in Round 1. Hellebuyck posted a forgettable 3.44 GAA and .886 SV% in those 5 games.
I'd imagine that with today's news, it's only a matter of time before the Jets announce their plans of entering a full-blown rebuild.
