Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube discusses his approach to managing the starting goalie position for the remainder of the season.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are coming off a 6-3 win against the Carolina Hurricanes in their first game back from the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament. Despite nearly blowing a 4-0 lead, the victory marked Anthony Stolarz's second win since returning from injury.
Both Stolarz and Joseph Woll have been outstanding this season, leading to speculation about who will be the team's primary starting goalie.
Head coach Craig Berube recently addressed how he plans to handle the goaltending situation moving forward.
"Today on TSN's Toronto Maple Leafs pre-game coverage, Craig Berube was asked how he plans to use his goalies down the stretch. Chief confirmed that he plans to utilize both Woll and Stolarz during what will be a very busy schedule. Still no clear cut #1 goalie in Toronto."
Berube, known for being honest and open with the media, has made it clear that both goalies will continue to split starts for now.
So far this season, Stolarz has been better than Woll, though in a smaller sample size. Stolarz holds an 11-5-2 record, with a 2.13 GAA and an impressive .928 SV%. Meanwhile, Woll boasts a more modest 19-11 record, with a 2.65 GAA and a .909 SV%.
Despite both goalies dealing with injuries, they have each stepped up when needed. This is a luxury many teams don't have-two goalies good enough to be starters.
While Berube and the Maple Leafs will continue to split starts between Stolarz and Woll, one question remains: Who will be the starting goalie come playoff time?
