That was bad news for the Leafs and Bunting as his play with Matthews and Marner this season has helped propel all of them to career seasons. Bunting himself leads the rookie scoring race and has a good chance to win the Calder Trophy. Matthews is on his way to a second straight Rocket Richard and has his first 100 point season and Marner is on the verge of his first 100 point season as well.
Bunting brings the Brad Marchand pest element to the Leafs lineup, which is something Hyman tried to do but wasn't overly successful at. Having him miss any playoff time where his play style would thrive would severely hurt the Leafs chances of getting out of the first round.
Sheldon Keefe presented Leafs Nation some good news this afternoon though. He said Bunting woke up feeling better than expected. It is still not known how long he will be out for as he will be evaluated when the Leafs return to Toronto, but it's a good sign he is feeling much better today. Hopefully this means that whatever the original projection for a possible return may have been has been escalated. The Leafs will need their primary pest for what will hopefully be a very deep postseason run.
