After departing for Edmonton in the off-season after he and the Leafs couldn't agree to terms on a new deal, Campbell makes his return to Toronto tonight.
"Definitely appreciate all the love (the fans) have given me in my career here. Can't really imagine what it's going to be like. I love all the fans here, love my teammates and the city," said Campbell of his time in Toronto.
Unfortunately for Campbell and Leaf fans, he will not be between the pipes tonight as the Oilers will lean on Stuart Skinner instead. "You guys know I hold myself to a pretty high standard and it just hasn't gone that way yet this year. But I'm working hard and I know I'll get there," commented Campbell on not starting tonight.
In his 2.5 years with the Leafs, Campbell went 51-14-9 with a .916 save percentage, 2.50GAA and 7 shutouts in the regular season. In the post season he went 6-8 with a .915 save percentage and 2.45GAA. So far things have not gone well for Campbell with the Oilers so far this season as he had only gone 17-9-4 while posting an .882 save percentage and 3.57GAA.
In lieu of returning tonight, and his struggles this season, the guys over at Leafs Morning Take debated if Kyle Dubas letting Campbell walk was the best decision he made as GM of the Leafs. Nick Alberga and Jay Rosehill agreed it was the best move Dubas has made as GM and sited him as realizing that after 3 playoff runs goaltending was not getting it done that he had to change things up, much like he has done with the roster in the weeks leading up to the trade deadline.
