Canucks officially name 15th captain in franchise history
Last season, when Bo Horvat was dealt to the New York Islanders, it left the Canucks without a captain for the remainder of the 2022-23 campaign. Now, after much speculation in recent weeks, the Canucks have finally named a new captain. Quinn Hughes will serve as the 15th captain in franchise history.
Hughes was originally drafted by the Canucks with the 7th overall pick back in 2018. Rather than joining the Canucks at the beginning of his draft year, Hughes went back to the University of Michigan for one more season before coming over at the end of the 2018-19 season, skating in 5 games with the Canucks, registering 3 points.
In the 4 years that followed, Hughes produced at least 41 points in each campaign, with his lowest being 41 points in 56 games in the COVID-shortened 2020-21 season. He tallied a career high 76 points in 78 games last season.
After being named captain of the Canucks today, Hughes issued the following statement:

"It means a great deal to me to be named captain of the Canucks. When I came here 5 years ago, I knew what I was walking into having grown up in Toronto; just a crazy hockey market and a passionate fan base. It has been a pleasure and treat to play for this franchise and to be the captain is something that is incredibly special and something that I couldn't ever imagine would happen." - Hughes on being named the 15th captain in Canucks history
The team's GM, Patrik Allvin, revealed in his statement that not only was the team happy for Hughes, but that the decision was supported by everyone in the locker room, including other stars like Elias Pettersson and J.T. Miller, who were candidates to wear the C as well.
"We informed our core leadership group that Quinn was going to be the captain. Not only was everybody enthusiastic and supportive of the decision, but they were also extremely happy for Quinn. He is very well liked and respected inside our dressing room, and we know he will continue to grow and develop his leadership skills in the years to come." - Canucks GM Patrik Allvin on the decision to put the C on Hughes
Congrats to Hughes on the incredible honour of being named captain in Vancouver. The Canucks picked a good one.
