In November of the 2019-2020 season, the Leafs made the decision to let Mike Babcock go and bring in Sheldon Keefe. Following his firing, reports surfaced about how Babcock treated his players over the years, including having Mitch Marner write a list of who he thought worked the hardest and who was lazy. That list was supposed to be confidential, but Babcock reportedly revealed it to the rest of the guys in the locker room.

At the time of his firing, Babcock had multiple years left on his contract with the Leafs and was owed just under $30M. Currently still being paid by the Leafs, Babcock took some time away from the game and then coached at the University of Saskatchewan for one season before resigning and announcing his "retirement".

According to The Athletic however, Babcock is considering coming out of retirement and has recently spoken to the Columbus Blue Jackets about their vacant head coaching position. I, for one, am not sure why they would choose Babcock, who is a hard-nosed coach after seeing how poorly the relationship between their stars and another hard-nosed coach in John Tortorella went.
