This year, things have taken a turn with McDavid pacing the league in goals, assists, and points. He is 1st with 54 goals, (10 ahead of 2nd place in David Pastrnak), 1st in assists with 70 (4 up on Nikita Kucherov) and 1st in points with a ridiculous 124 in only 65 games (28 ahead of fellow teammate, Leon Draisaitl).
Matthews hasn't had the same kind of success even to his own lofty standards this season, as he has 28 goals and 61 points in 56 games after missing some time due to injury. Nevertheless, he set the bar high with his 60-goal and 106-point season in only 73 appearances last year.
However, game recognizes game, as McDavid gave Matthews a huge shoutout in an intermission interview. Not egregiously known for his goal scoring, McDavid has taken the league by storm and when asked about his newfound goal scoring prowess, he was quoted as saying:
Matthews is known for his blistering shot, whether it be his snap-shot, wrister or one-timer, and that was evidenced during their last game against the New Jersey Devils when he scored the game winning goal from his patented shot in the slot. There's no animosity between two of the league's best young stars. They both recognize each other as elite athletes and it's refreshing hearing those kinds of remarks - especially from the guy who leads the league by 10 goals and 28 points.
