Denis Malgin is one of the players who is on the cusp of making the Toronto Maple Leafs. The speedy, undersized forward has been playing incredible hockey throughout the preseason, but there's only so many roster spots available. Malgin needed to do something special tonight to give the coaches something to think about. That's exactly what he did
Tonight, Malgin was dressed over Nick Robertson for one more chance to snag a roster spot. With the game tied in the second period Malgin picked up the puck at the Leafs blue line and flew down the ice. He absolutely undressed a pair of Wings defensemen, split them, and broke in alone, sniping one past Wings goaltender Jussi Olkinuora. It marked Malgin's 4th goal and 8th point of the preseason, moving him into a tie with the aforementioned Robertson for the team lead in preseason points.
It will be extremely difficult at this point to keep Malgin out of the opening night lineup. Unfortunately, if he's out on waivers, there's very little chance he will clear. Sheldon Keefe and Kyle Dubas have some tough decisions to make.
