Ex-Leaf arrested on several charges, has contract terminated
On July 1, former Leaf Alex Galchenyuk signed a 1-year deal with Arizona that would see him earn $775K for the season. Twelve days later - yes, earlier today - the Coyotes placed him on waivers to terminate his contract. At the time, the reason was unknown and it was reported that the NHLPA was reviewing the incident.
This evening, The Athletic's Katie Strang has confirmed why the Arizona Coyotes placed former Leaf on unconditional waivers to terminate his contract. Strang has reported that the Scottsdale Police Department confirmed that Alex Galchenyuk was arrested on July 9th on a number of charges including private property hit and run, disorderly conduct, failure to obey, resisting arrest and threatening or intimidating.
That is an alarming number of charges and that may not be all that Galchenyuk was charged with, so you can see why Arizona wants to terminate his contract. The silver lining with the incident is that there were no reported injuries - just the damage to the property.
Since being drafted third overall by the Canadiens in the 2012 draft, Galchenyuk has bounced around the NHL with stops in Colorado, Toronto, Ottawa, Carolina and had previously been on the Coyotes twice before. Hopefully Galchenyuk can get the help he needs and find his way again, but for now it does not appear that he will be back in the NHL any time soon.
