The Leafs and Ryan Reaves took on the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday, with the veteran enforcer dropping the gloves for the first time this season against fellow enforcer Arber Xhekaj in what was a rather brief disappointing scrap after Xhekaj had pushed Reaves over the back of the Canadiens' net. However, another fight that took place last night in the AHL was anything but disappointing.
Last night as the Calgary Wranglers and Manitoba Moose of the AHL squared off in Winnipeg, Jeffrey Viel and Alex Gallant dropped the gloves with just over 12 minutes to play in the first period. At the time, Manitoba was up 2-0 and Gallant was looking to spark a Wranglers' comeback as he and Viel engaged in a very violent and fierce tilt. Neither combatant was concerned with defending themselves in this one. Both Viel and Gallant were looking to inflict the maximum amount of damage on one another, which brought the entire arena to their feet.
As fas as the game went, the fight seemed to spark the Wranglers as they managed to overcome the 2-0 deficit and claim the 4-2 victory. So I suppose, in that sense, Gallant may have been the winner, if you had to name one.
