Acquired along with Jonathan Huberdeau in exchange for Matthew Tkachuk, MacKenzie Weegar had said from the beginning that he wanted to get a long term extension done before the season started. It appears he'll be getting his wish as Elliotte Friedman is reporting Weegar and the Flames are close to an 8-year deal worth around $50M.

Weegar is entering the final year of his current deal that pays him $3.25M for the season. Last season with Florida he set new career highs in goals, assists and points while playing in 80 games. His new deal is expected to pay him in the neighbourhood of $6.25M per season.

The 28-year-old's new deal will expire when he is 36, meaning that he could very well play the rest of his career in Calgary. The addition of Weegar to the Flames' blueline instantly made them one of the best and deepest bluelines in the league as they also have Noah Hanifin, Rasmus Andersson, Oliver Kylington, Chris Tanev and Nikita Zadorov signed for the next few seasons.
