The Philadelphia Flyers continue their top to bottom rebuild on Friday, placing troublesome defender Tony DeAngelo on waivers for the purposes of a buyout. The Flyers had attempted to trade DeAngelo to Carolina earlier this summer, but the trade was blocked by the NHL, as the league had established that the deal violated the CBA.

DeAngelo has been a player followed by controversy over his career. If and when he signs in Carolina, which is the expectation at this point, it will be his 2nd stint in Carolina and the 5th time he has changed teams in 8 seasons in the league. His previous 7 seasons were spent split between the Arizona Coyotes, New York Rangers, Carolina Hurricanes, and of course, the Flyers. He also spent a year with Tampa's AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch.

Teams will have an opportunity to claim DeAngelo on waivers at noon ET on Saturday, but if he clears, the buyout will be executed as planned. If the buyout does go off without a hitch, it will be the first time in NHL history that a player was bought out twice, per CapFriendly. He was, of course, bought out by the Rangers in 2021.

DeAngelo had 1 year remaining on his current deal, which carries a $5M cap hit.
