As is the case every year, when teams win the Stanley Cup, each player in the organization gets to spend one day with the Cup in a place of his choosing. For Kessel, that day was yesterday and the place he chose might surprise some. Kessel chose to celebrate his day with the Cup in Toronto.
It doesn't take a genius to realize why Kessel has chosen to bring the Cup to Toronto. This also isn't the first time. Kessel also brought the Stanley Cup to Toronto following his 2016 Cup win with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Kessel had a particularly nasty relationship with Toronto-based writer Steve Simmons, who works with the Toronto Sun. Simmons used to give Kessel the gears on a regular basis and once reported that Kessel used to frequent a hot dog vendor in Toronto daily, a report which Kessel refuted. Not only did Kessel bring the Cup to Toronto in 2016, a year after being traded by the Leafs, he also ate hot dogs out of the Cup following his 2017 win, as a way of taking a shot at Simmons in a highly publicized image.
There are a number of different takes about this situation. Some view Kessel as being overtly petty following a rocky run in Toronto. Others simply feel as though Kessel is making good on a promise to his dedicated fans in Toronto to bring the Cup back there. I suppose only Phil knows for sure, but either way, that's some legend stuff right there.
