Holl was a second round pick of Chicago in 2010 and struggled to find his way after his NCAA career, making a pit stop in the ECHL before joining the AHL's Toronto Marlies in 2015. He didn't become an NHL regular until 2019-20. While Holl will be the first one to admit that his time in Toronto had its ups and downs, he also admitted this week that he enjoyed his time there. Still, a fresh start was definitely alluring and Holl is happy to have the chance to start over with a new club and a clean slate.
As tough as the market can be to play in, Holl learned a lot while playing in Toronto. Even if his tenure didn't end in the best way, being scratched for a handful of playoff games and the Leafs being ousted in 5 games by Florida, nothing has shaken his confidence. Holl will now look to a fresh start in Detroit where he (hopefully) won't have to deal with such a critical and volatile fanbase.
