It wasn't that long ago Leafs fans saw Kasperi Kapanen traded back to the team that selected him 22nd overall in the 2014 entry draft, the Pittsburgh Penguins. In August 2020, only a few weeks after the Leafs were knocked out of the qualifying round of the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs by the Columbus Blue Jackets, Kapanen was part of a trade to the Pittsburgh Penguins that netted the Leafs a 2020 first-round draft pick, which they used on Rodion Amirov.

Obviously, things haven't panned out quite the way the Leafs had hoped, through absolutely no fault of the team or of Amirov, who was tragically diagnosed with a brain tumour earlier this year. However, things haven't exactly panned out for the Pens either. Just over two years later, there is now a chance that the Pens might put Kapanen on waivers.

For the two games before Pittsburgh's 5-4 OT loss against the Montreal Canadiens last night, Kapanen found himself as a healthy scratch. The Penguins won both of those games, one of them being against the Leafs.

Whether or not Kapanen will be put on waivers is yet to be determined, but it doesn't seem so far-fetched, given how he's been playing. It'll be interesting to see if a team claims him if it does happen. He's on the Pens' payroll through 2023-24 at $3.2M per season.
