A former Leafs netminder is staring down the barrel of a lengthy suspension stemming from an incident on Thursday where he actually whipped a water bottle at a referee following an overtime loss, striking the official in the back as he was headed off the ice.

The incident earned Kaskisuo a 5-game suspension and a fine of approximately $2,300 USD. The 29-year-old, who spent 6 seasons with the Leafs organization, issued the following statement, addressing his actions following yesterday's loss.

"After an obvious too many men on the ice and/or offside in the same situation, I let in a cheap goal and we lose heavily whereupon my emotions and frustration take over. As an athlete at the highest level, I should handle the situation differently. In this case I didn't and I am very sorry for that and I am ashamed. I apologize to the referee, my teammates, the club and the fans."

Had he done this in the NHL, Kaskisuo would have likely faced a suspension more than double the length and I don't even want to speculate as to how large the fine would have been. Sheldon Keefe was recently fined $25,000 just for yelling at an official. Striking an official with a water bottle would likely carry a hefty financial penalty.

Kaskisuo, now with Leksands IF in the SHL in Sweden, has played just 14 games so far this season, owning a 3-9-0 record to go along with a 3.30 GAA and a .879 SV%.
