In a shocking turn of events, the Florida Panthers have reportedly replaced interim head coach Andrew Brunette with former Leafs, Hurricanes, Jets head coach Paul Maurice.

The move is a surprising one, given the fact that Brunette led the Panthers to an NHL-best 122 points, securing the first Presidents Trophy in franchise history, and setting a Panthers record for both points and wins in the process. Brunette was also a Finalist for the Jack Adams Award.

Maurice left the Jets during the 2021-22 season of his own accord, stating that it was the right time for the two sides to part. We knew that he wouldn't be out of work long, but this one is way out of left field, there were no previous reports that he was even in the running for the gig in Florida.

At this point, it appears as though Brunette will be offered a "significant role" if he elects to stay with the club. I'd imagine that Brunette will have other offers on the table for a head coaching gig after the year he had in Florida.

Maurice's term is believed to be 3 years in Florida.
