At the start of the season and right up until this past week, it was reported that the Maple Leafs - like a handful of contending teams - would be interested in acquiring the services of the 3-time Stanley Cup Champion ahead of the trade deadline with the Blackhawks looking to sell the farm. Kane suggested that wasn't as interested in Toronto as the media had reported and his likely preferred destinations were going to be either New York or Boston.
The veteran was rather upset when he found out that the Rangers had traded for Vladimir Tarasenko and then explained how that was his preferred destination and how it seems unlikely that they could swing another deal for him. Toronto then entered the chat and there was a solid week of rumours - from credible sources - about the sudden mutual interest.
Then, the Leafs acquired Ryan O'Reilly and Noel Acciari from the St.Louis Blues and essentially traded several pieces that would've or could've been used in a trade for Kane, scrapping that idea altogether. Kane has since mentioned that he never had any interest, sparking a lively conversation on the Spittin' Chiclets podcast.
Ryan Whitney:
"5 goals in his last 2 games, including a hat-trick against Toronto, and what was interesting was his quotes after where they asked him about the chance or maybe the rumours about going to Toronto and he's like "that was never even really discussed" and kind of made a point that not everything you hear is true. Now there's some very reliable sources out there, but even those guys end up getting false information and maybe taking a shot at the rumour boys, us 4 who just sitting around making stuff up like I said when he was going to Boston."
Paul Bissonette:
"Oh, he's taken shots at me before, he called me a clown at the beginning of the year this year, when I was doing the first broadcast with the Stanley Cup Champions or the reigning Cup champions, Colorado Avalanche. He kind of subtly threw it under his breath. I think that was a shot at us. I think our prayer was heard worldwide."
Biz then went on to reveal that Kane once called him a "clown" and suggested that Kane is "anti-Christ" and joked that he "hated God", before suggesting that he'll likely force a trade to Dallas since there is no State tax in Texas. I guess blasphemy isn't something Biz is overly cautious of.
Kane has been very vocal this season in regards to his future, the way the Blackhawks have played, and how the Blackhawks have dealt with their players over the last few seasons (Alex DeBrincat and Kirby Dach trades). He still wants to go to the Rangers and is hoping something can still materialize but I guess the book has officially shut on the Maple Leafs even though it never really seemed like a likely destination.
