Phil Kessel has been known to be one of the more unorthodox players when it comes to diet and pre-game routines over his 1000+ straight games. On Wednesday, former Leafs teammate Kris Versteeg, who had a front row seat to his uniqueness during the 2010-2011 season, shared a funny Kessel story. Versteeg only played half a season with Kessel before he was traded to the Flyers at the trade deadline, but he was recently on the "Showbound" podcast and shared a hilarious story of Kessel's pre-game eating habits.
"He ate brutal," said Versteeg, "Pre-game meal he always had a designated bowl of cheddar cheese. Like a full bowl of Cheese...Then he'd go out and have two goals and an assist and I'd be minus three and he'd tell me after the game continuously how he felt terrible that night."
With how healthy the rest of the league is and how seriously other players take off-ice training, sometimes you have to wonder how Kessel does it and how his "brutal" eating has let him play over 1000 games consecutively or how good he would have been had he dedicated more of his time and energy to establishing proper eating habits during the season.
