On Monday, the Maple Leafs gave an unfortunate update on Jake Muzzin's health status. The veteran defenseman is currently dealing with a cervical spine injury that will have him out indefinitely. With Muzzin being placed on LTIR, the Leafs have a bit of room to work with, seeing as this move has provided them with $5.625M in cap space, leaving them with over $2M to spend - potentially more if they trim down the roster by a couple of bodies.

There have been some interesting names identified who the Leafs could bring in to fill the gap left by Muzzin's absence, including the likes of John Klingberg, Carson Soucy, Jakob Chychrun and even Matt Dumba, among others. Well, there are a few new options, according to The Athletic's Jonas Siegel.

Per Siegel, the Leafs could also go after Dmitry Orlov (WSH), Artem Zub (OTT) Scott Mayfield (NYI) or Connor Murphy (CHI).

Orlov, Zub, Mayfield and Murphy are all experienced defensive options for the Leafs, which could be very helpful - especially with the current absence of T.J. Brodie, who is also out with an oblique injury.

Luckily, the team recently saw the return of Timothy Liljegren and Jordie Benn to help level things out. An extra defenseman being added into the mix sure wouldn't hurt. But, of course, that is if the Leafs even decide to acquire a defenseman at all. They could elect to use their available cap space on a forward to help bolster the top 6.
