Back in July, the Montreal Canadiens acquired former third overall pick Kirby Dach from the Hawks in exchange for a few picks in the 2022 draft. Since then, Dach and the Habs have been unable to negotiate a new deal for the RFA forward.

The 21-year-old immediately fills a void for the Habs - an enormous 6'4 frame up the middle in their top 6. It's still baffling why the Hawks traded the 21-year-old, but whatever their reasoning, it is now up to the Habs to now develop him into the premier center they have been missing for some time.

Elliotte Friedman is reporting that the two sides are closing in on a 4-year deal worth $3.5M per season. At the expiry of the deal he would still be an RFA, but would have arbitration rights.

The deal is a win for Dach, given the fact he is coming off of a 26 point season and has only registered 19 goals over his first three seasons. The Habs are purely betting on his potential with this deal and it will be intriguing to see how a change of scenery will impact Dach and his development.
