The Montreal Canadiens have announced on Wednesday that they have signed controversial 2021 first round pick Logan Mailloux to an entry level contract. Selected 31st overall in the 2021 draft, the selection of Mailloux came with harsh criticisms from the hockey world after he was convicted of taking sexually explicit photos of a young woman without her consent and sharing them, along with her identity and social media profiles, with his teammates while playing for SK Lejon in Sweden.

Mailloux was convicted and forced to pay a $2000 fine. He renounced himself from the 2021 draft, stating he did not want to be drafted to focus on reconciliation and growth, but the Habs selected him anyway. He was also suspended by the OHL but reinstated after just 4 months on January 1, 2022.

In the press release, Habs GM Kent Hughes said "This is a decision that we have thought through carefully. Having Logan around members of our team and hockey operations staff for a good part of the summer allowed us to gain a greater appreciation of Logan Mailloux the person. He has an opportunity to affect positive change and we will work to support him in any effort towards that goal. Logan recognizes the impact of his gesture and of course, the process continues."

Mailloux's career and the Habs' handling of his situation will continue to be questioned, no matter what he or the team does. While he may have the talent to play in the NHL, he will always be a distraction and likely should not be playing given his conviction and previous actions.
