The Matt Murray trade has been, in a word, controversial. One of the riskiest moves Dubas has made was bringing in a 2-time Stanley Cup winning goaltender for free. Less than free actually, the Leafs were paid 2 picks and the Senators even retained salary in the deal. Regardless, it's a gamble. Murray has had a series of injuries derail a career that at one point had Hall of Fame written all over it. Now, he will try to get on the right track again with the Toronto Maple Leafs, with the Sens footing 25% of the bill for it.

Whether you like the deal or not, whether you think Murray still has it in him or not, he is now a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs. At this point, he's likely to be the starter on opening night. If you are a Leafs fan, you should be a Matt Murray fan. If you're still on the fence, just think, if Murray can return to the level he's capable of for the Leafs, the fact that Ottawa is still paying him to do so will be the most embarrassing thing to happen to an NHL team since the David Ayres fiasco.

Having said all that, the NHL's highlight reel of Murray's top 5 saves from last season tells us 3 things.

1: He never gives up on a play.

2: He still has the ability to make unbelievable saves.

3: The Senators' defense in front of him was absolutely atrocious.

Dubas has done a great job of rebuilding the Leafs defense, something he doesn't get nearly enough credit for. Now that Murray has an actual, honest to goodness defense corps in front of him, I believe we will see the Matt Murray of old return.
