After stating he was surprised by his trade out of Florida as contract talks had not even begun with the Panthers, newly minted Flames winger Jonathan Huberdeau said he would be open to signing a long-term deal in Calgary. Huberdeau was on TSN 1050's Overdrive yesterday where Bryan Hayes asked him about whether the Panthers gave him an explanation for the trade or not.

Huberdeau said there was no real explanation, which he felt was unfair and disrespectful after having spent his entire career with the Panthers organization.

"I gave a lot to the organization, I would have liked probably to get a little bit more respect."

Tkachuk is much younger than Huberdeau, which he assumed was part of the reason for the trade and there is cost certainty involved there as well.

Huberdeau is a UFA at the end of the upcoming season, but after yesterday's comment about being open to a long-term extension in Calgary, I'd imagine that he would have entertained the idea of re-upping with the Panthers long-term as well, had the Panthers given him that opportunity.

Coming off of a career year with 115 points, Huberdeau will be looking to replicate his success and cash in on what will likely be his final long term contract -- only instead of signing that contract with the Panthers, he'll consider doing so in Calgary, though free agency still very much remains a viable option.
