Ilya Samsonov showcases his winning personality with thoughtful post-game comments
Before Friday night's game against the Blue Jackets, Ilya Samsonov admitted to being startled by the Columbus goal cannon the first time he played there. His solution to the problem was brilliant: Don't allow any goals. Samsonov stopped all 30 shots he faced during the Leafs' 3-0 victory over the Jackets. It was an important win for the 26-year-old netminder, who has struggled on the road so far this season. In his post game interview, Samsonov refused to take credit for the win, choosing instead to compliment the Leafs' defensive game in front of him.
I never see better game than today. How many shots we block. How we play on the PK. We have a lot of time in the offensive zone. This shutout not about me. This more team - Ilya Samsonov
Samsonov also offered recent Marlies call up Joseph Woll some advice for his season debut on Saturday night. It will be the first home game of Woll's career, all 4 of his starts during the 2021-22 season came on the road.
Enjoy. [Any] time you play in Scotiabank, this is awesome. I never see better place to play, because fans great. Atmosphere so nice. I'm a little bit jealous, but I'm so happy for him & good luck
You know, part of the reason Jack Campbell's departure hurt was because the Leafs were losing a fantastic personality as well as a goalie who had played well at times. Samsonov has not only outperformed Campbell on the ice this season, he's somehow managed to be even more charismatic than the former Leafs goalie. If his excellent play continues through to the end of the season, a long-term contract should absolutely be in the works for the pending RFA.
