Toronto native Tom Wilson was sidelined in Game 1 of the Washington Capitals' first round series against the Florida Panthers, due to what was announced at the time as a lower-body injury. Wilson was spotted on the ice on several occasions throughout the remainder of round 1, with some suggesting he could return. That idea was shot down when Caps GM Brian MacLellan and Tom Wilson himself both confirmed that the injury he was dealing with was a significant one that would have kept him out for the remainder of the playoffs.

Well, now we know the extend of Wilson's injury. Per the Capitals' official PR Twitter account, Wilson suffered a torn ACL that was so bad that he had to undergo a surgical procedure to reconstruct his ACL. At this point, the Caps are expecting him to miss the next 6-8 months, meaning we may not see Wilson back in action until sometime in early 2023.

That's a massive loss for the Caps. Aside from Wilson's physicality and ability to get under the skin of the opposition, Washington relies on Wilson for his goalscoring contributions as well. The 28-year-old has scored 20 or more goals in 3 of the last 4 seasons.

MacLellan has already confirmed that there are changes coming in Washington, so one has to wonder if Wilson's health status may have the Caps pondering a step back this season and a bit of a down year in order to help facilitate a rebuild/re-tool on the fly.
