GM Kyle Dubas has been widely criticized for the handling of the William Nylander and Mitch Marner contract negotiations, but according to trusted NHL Insider Frank Seravalli, Dubas made it very clear to the Sandin camp how this one was going to play out.
Per Seravalli, the Sandin camp was heavily pursuing a $1.6M AAV after Sean Durzi had signed his contract with the LA Kings. Dubas and company informed the Sandin camp that they were unwilling to come up on their $1.4M AAV offer. In the end, the agreement was that Sandin would sign for $1.4M per season, so long as the final year of his deal paid him $1.6M, to boost his qualifying offer on his next contract.
In the end, the Leafs got the deal that they wanted and Sandin will also get what he wants, thanks in part to a bevy of injuries on the blueline - an opportunity to play. The Leafs are currently dealing with injuries to Jake Muzzin, Jordie Benn, Carl Dahlstrom and Timothy Liljegren.
