That however, as of this moment does not appear to be the case. On TSN's Insider Trading, Chris Johnston provided an update on the situation.
"Nothing has changed in terms of the last time Auston Matthews spoke at locker clean out day. His intention is to sign with the Leafs," Said Johnston. Johnston also went on to say that it may not happen July First now, but it'll depend on how well the new GM can sell Matthews on the new direction of the team. CJ further detailed that Matthews and his agent are currently waiting to see how things pan out and what happens with the roster and such.
It's not bad news for Leaf fans, but it's not exactly great news either. Once July 1st hits, Matthews holds all the leverage as his No movement clause kick in and if he wanted to or had a change of heart he could walk himself to free agency.
