Everyone knows that the Leafs are in the market for a defenseman, and have been since the summer. Leafs GM Brad Treliving had commented a number of times about wanting to revamp his blueline and now with Giordano, Klingberg and Liljegren sidelined, it may expedite things a little.
NHL Hockey Insider Frank Seravalli has scoured the market to identify over half a dozen defensmen who might interest the Maple Leafs - some of whom we already know and others which are being mentioned in connection to the Buds for the first time.
Seravalli has identified Chris Tanev, Nikita Zadorov, Andrew Peeke, Alexandre Carrier, Will Borgen, Mario Ferraro and Travis Sanheim as defenders who may be targeted by the Leafs as a result of their contract statuses and/or their known previous availability.
One name who we hadn't heard mentioned in connection to the Leafs prior who could make a lot of sense is Ferraro, a Toronto native. Seravalli likens his game and his situation to that of current Leaf Jake McCabe.
The Leafs are facing a particularly busy week, so it wouldn't be too farfetched to see Treliving take a swing on a deal in the coming days to ensure that the Leafs have enough healthy NHL-caliber bodies on the blueline to get by.
