Insider in Vancouver provides update on Luke Schenn, reveals what his contract asks are from the Leafs in negotiations
There's been a lot of talk in recent weeks about the Leafs and Luke Schenn and whether or not the two sides can find common ground on a deal. The Leafs, as we know, really like what Schenn brings to the table, and Schenn has been very outspoken about how much he has enjoyed and appreciated his second run in Toronto. The problem is, there are a lot of people who assume that Vancouver is still very much in the race to bring Schenn back to the Canucks.
On Thursday, during the popular Vancouver-based hockey show "Donnie & Dhali", Canucks insider Rick Dhaliwal had plenty to say about where Schenn's head is at in terms of where he wants to be next season. Dhaliwal not only believes that Schenn wants to be in Toronto, but he also mentioned a few details regarding Schenn's negotiations with the Leafs - some of the things he's looking for in terms of his next contract.
"I just wanted to give an update on Luke Schenn. He is talking about the Maple Leafs about staying in Toronto. Schenn is obviously going to get a well-deserved bump in pay, but he's also looking for term, Donny, no surprise there - and some trade protection as well after bouncing around so much the last few years. He's got a young family, looking for a more stable situation. You can't blame 'em." - Dhaliwal on Schenn wanting multiple years and trade protection on his next deal
Dhaliwal also mentioned that Schenn got "a taste of the playoffs" again, this time, obviously in Toronto, and with all the uncertainty in Vancouver, he believes that Schenn may prefer to stay in Toronto to continue pushing with the Leafs to try to win his third Stanley Cup, as the Canucks are still several years away from contending. Dhaliwal also mentioned that Brad Treliving pushed hard to try to acquire Schenn at the deadline in Calgary as well, so we know Treliving likes what Schenn brings to the table.
I think I speak for most or all of Leafs Nation when I say that we'd love to have "The Human Eraser" come back for another kick at the can in Toronto.
