BREAKING!! Leafs announce significant front office hire
Last week, just days after the Leafs named Brad Treliving their new General Manager, reports surfaced that Treliving's first hire would be a significant one and someone that is very popular around the league. Today, Kevin Weekes reported that those rumours are true as the Leafs are hiring Shane Doan as an Assistant to GM Brad Treliving.
Treliving spent time as the assistant GM in Arizona before landing the GM job in Calgary, so not only is he familiar with Doan already, but the two have a very good relationship as well.
Doan was drafted seventh overall by the Winnipeg Jets in 1995 and played one season in Winnipeg before the team relocated to Arizona. Doan skated in 1540 games for the Jets/Coyotes and registered 942 points to go along with 1343 penalty minutes.
Doan has been serving as the Coyotes' Chief Hockey Development Officer, but there have been reports in the past that Doan has been looking to leave the only franchise he's ever known as he has been unhappy with how the team is run. With Doan being brought in as an Assistant to Treliving what does this mean for Brandon Pridham, the Leafs' cap wizard? Could we see him on his way to Pittsburgh to join Kyle Dubas as the GM of the Pens? Is Doan's role more similar to what Jason Spezza was doing for Kyle Dubas in Toronto? Right now, that much is unclear.
Also of note, Doan's arrival in Toronto may have a positive impact on the Auston Matthews negotiations, as Doan was one of the players Matthews idolized growing up in Arizona.
