Insider provides one last William Nylander update prior to the start of training camp
As training camps are set to kick off today with media availability, physicals and medicals, William Nylander enters camp without an extension. The first question he faces will likely be about his extension and if there has been any progress. You can bet he will do something similar to what Auston Matthews did last season; answered the question once and said he wasn't talking about it anymore.
As Nylander heads into the final year of the deal he signed in 2018 at the eleventh hour, there has not been much reported progress on a new deal. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported in his "32 Thoughts" written version that he believes Nylander will play the entire season as a Leaf whether he is signed or not to an extension. Friedman also mentioned that Sheldon Keefe may deploy him at center from time to time which would be another bargaining chip for Nylander, depending how much time he spends in the middle.
While the two sides aren't believed to be close or may not have had many talks recently, the Leafs are hopeful to sign Nylander. Nylander has also said he wants to stay, but for now will have to try to one-up his career season last year, while dealing with contract distractions, which may not be an easy task.
