Last summer, it was made public that Kyle Dubas would enter this season without a new contract in place, but many Leaf fans hoped that he would get one at some point this season. With his current contract expiring June 30th, and no extension in sight just yet, it's possible that Dubas could be on his way out of Toronto. According to NHL Insider Frank Seravalli, there is an apparent struggle of power between Dubas and team president Brendan Shanahan.

Seravalli noted that there has been a few times that Shanahan has axed a potential idea and/or move Dubas wanted to make. According to Seravalli, it is believed that if the Leafs don't make it out of the first round, Dubas will be on the outs and off to Pittsburgh or Ottawa. Seravalli's reporting contradicts what Elliotte Friedman said this weekend, declaring his belief that Dubas will remain with the Leafs.

Dubas is the only GM that Auston Matthews has had a relationship with and since he and William Nylander are eligible to sign an extension on July 1st, 2023, why would the Leafs bring someone else in that has no pre-existing relationship with the team's superstars? The next two weeks will provide a much clearer picture to the Leafs' off-season and Kyle Dubas' future with the club.

I tend to believe that since the Leafs are such a tight-lipped organization, these rumours of a rift between Dubas and Shanahan might be a little far-fetched.
