Just last night, it was reported that Dubas plans on bringing Jason Spezza with him to Pittsburgh, though Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman revealed that it would not be as the team's next GM. We already know from his presser that Dubas plans to act as GM on an interim basis as well through June and into July, when he'll begin interviewing GM candidates. However, what we didn't know was just how involved Dubas plans to be even after a GM is hired.
On Saturday evening, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported that Dubas may be looking to use his power and influence in Pittsburgh to make all of the decisions, even once he has a GM in place.
I suppose this shouldn't really surprise us, as we know that a part of his late changes to his contract with Toronto during the negotiating process was an elevated level of authority and autonomy. If he pushed for that in Toronto, there was no question that he was going to push for the same thing in Pittsburgh.
Now Dubas finds himself in the position of potential creating the same problem in Pittsburgh that he was trying to solve in Toronto. That was a pretty quick turn. It's like that phrase in The Dark Knight - "you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain".
