Leafs GM Kyle Dubas reportedly wanted to "do right" by Simmonds and wanted to find him a new team with whom he could challenge for a Stanley Cup rather than dealing him somewhere he may not have wanted to go. Well, according to NHL Insider Frank Seravalli, at least one team did express some interest in the intimidating winger. That team is the Edmonton Oilers.
Per Seravalli, since Evander Kane went down with a wrist laceration, the Oilers have been scouring the league for a forward who is "tough to play against". Well, Simmonds is certainly that with the way he plays the game, throwing hits and dropping the gloves when the situation calls for it.
There's no denying that players like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl would feel a lot safer with a guy like Simmonds on the bench and patrolling the ice. However, Seravalli also reported that the Oilers may have withdrawn their interest, at least for now, and have begun to look elsewhere.
