With the Leafs having so much money committed to the top half of the lineup, it is no secret that Toronto is always looking in the free agent bargain bin to round out the bottom of the roster. One name that some felt could have been a fit earlier in the offseason is left winger Sonny Milano. The 26-year-old is coming off a career season in which he tallied 34 points (14 goals & 20 assists) in 66 games for the Anaheim Ducks. Milano was a restricted free agent who the Ducks decided not to give a qualifying offer to, allowing him to walk into free agency.

Now we sit, nearly half way through September, and Milano has not been able to find an NHL contract. This may have came as a surprise to some, but today on Sportsnet 960, NHL insider Frank Seravalli revealed teams have stayed away from him because of his history of concussions. Milano only played 6 games in the 2020-21 season due to concussion like symptoms.

Milano was originally drafted in the first round (16th overall) by the Columbus Blue Jackets back in 2014. After bouncing between the AHL & NHL for a few seasons, he was traded in 2020 to the Anaheim Ducks for Devin Shore. In 197 NHL career games, Milano has tallied a total of 81 points (36 goals & 45 assists).
