With the Toronto Maple Leafs being so banged up on the blueline at the moment, with Timothy Liljegren, Jordie Benn and Jake Muzzin all sidelined due to injuries of a varying level of severity. Yes, Liljegren and Benn have since returned to practice, but Sheldon Keefe has already revealed that Liljegren is still a long way off and Benn has yet to be re-evaluated after being injured during the preseason. Now, with Muzzin having gone down with a reported neck injury, it has some folks wondering whether or not the Leafs are interested in acquiring a defenseman via trade.

Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli was asked point blank today, while on the Leafs Morning Take with Nick Alberga and Jay Rosehill, whether or not the Muzzin injury could entice the Leafs to circle back on Jakob Chychrun in Arizona. His response seemed to indicate that the Leafs are not one of the teams who have been consistently interested in Chychrun.

"I don't believe [the Leafs] have really been one of those teams that's been in hot pursuit of Jakob Chychrun. I think they had made call way back when this all started... part of that interest may hinge on whether or not Jake Muzzin is available to them."

-Seravalli on whether the Leafs might be interested in touching base with the Coyotes on Chychrun

By the sounds of things, from Seravalli's perspective, Jake Muzzin's health status and how serious his injury actually is might be the determining factor in whether or not the Leafs pursue a trade for a defenseman.

At this point, T.J. Brodie has made it seem like Muzzin wasn't too far off from returning. Meanwhile, Mitch Marner's comments made it sound like Muzzin's season might be over. It's really anyone's guess as to how this one will play out. Seravalli did indicate though that there were already pre-existing concerns over Muzzin's health status long before he suffered his most recent neck injury. He had mentioned that Muzzin's back issue appeared to be hindering his play tremendously and that, at this point, he doesn't appear to be in any shape to play at the highest level anymore. So that's something else to consider.
