For the Leafs, it was a tough outing on Monday night after giving up the lead late in the third period, losing a razor-close 3-2 OT decision at home, potentially losing their top defenseman, Morgan Rielly, following an accidental collision with Isles winger Kyle Palmieri and they almost lost Auston Matthews in the game as well.

During the third period, Islanders forward Oliver Wahlstrom took a run at Matthews and stuck the leg out, clipping Matthews with a nasty-looking knee-on-knee hit.

We've seen hits like this end players' seasons prematurely. Thankfully, Rasmus Sandin took exception and went right after Wahlstrom, dropping the gloves to avenge his teammate and even more thankfully, Matthews got up and seemed no worse for the wear.

Regardless of whether or not Matthews was injured, Wahlstrom's hit on Matthews was a dirty one and could have injured one of the absolute best players in the league. I fully expect the Department of Player Safety to take a look at this one.
