John Klingberg speaks out about his struggles and fan criticism through 13 games
A day after going -3 and being on the ice for four Ottawa Senators goals, Maple Leafs defenseman John Klingberg found himself skating as the seventh defenseman at practice today. His demotion also comes after Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe said he was concerned about his play and that the team had to do a better job of protecting him. Having him as the seventh defenseman and possibly in the press box for tomorrow's game is certainly one way to limit his defensive issues.
Following practice, Klingberg was asked about his struggles so far this season and what the cause of them are.
"I don't feel like I'm moving my feet well I think when I've been really really struggling I think it's when you're trying to do too much."
Klingberg also admitted that while he is trying not to do too much, and trying to keep things simple, he feels pressure from himself to help the team, which ends up causing more issues.
"I told myself not to do that stuff and just let the game come to me. But at the same time, I have to find ways to contribute both with the puck and without the puck."
Klingberg also told the media that he's trying his best to block out all of the outside noise.
Based on practice and Sheldon Keefe's comments that 11 forwards and 7 defensemen is a possibility tomorrow night, Klingberg could still dress, but see very limited ice time, such as on the powerplay, depending how the game plays out. Either way, it sounds like the Leafs will be playing without one of their off-season signings as Ryan Reaves remained on the ice after practice which is something only scratches typically do.
