The Calgary Flames pulled out all the stops to try to re-sign Johnny Gaudreau last off-season before he bolted to Columbus on a 7-year deal that pays him $9.75M per season. Gaudreau revealed that he did want to get a deal done with Calgary and that they were involved down to the last moment, but in the end it didn't work out.

Recently, Gaudreau's parents opened up on a podcast about how the Calgary Flames shot themselves in the foot when it came to resigning Gaudreau saying, "The summer before (2021), had they offered him a contract not even remotely close. Johnny said, 'I would've been in Calgary for eight more years. this would have been a non-issue.' Well, the Flames offered him a contract. It wasn't even close to his market value. it was a joke. he was really, really embarrassed."

That must sting for Flames fans given how much he said he wanted to stay in Calgary. While the Flames offered him a reported 8-year, $80M deal this past off-season to stay, it would seem that although the Flames did everything they could, the writing was on the wall for Gaudreau when the club shortchanged him a year prior.
