While the Toronto Maple Leafs are enjoying a strong season, sitting atop the Atlantic Division with 62 points, one former cornerstone piece is slowly seeing his role on the team diminish. That player is 30-year-old Morgan Rielly.
Speculation has been swirling in Leafs Nation about a potential trade for Rielly, given his struggles this season, and one proposal might make sense for both teams involved.
As per Nealer on X:
At first glance, this trade idea might seem far-fetched, particularly with the salary cap complications. Erik Karlsson still carries a $10 million dollar cap hit for the next two seasons after the retention from San Jose, which could be difficult to make work.
However, it may be more realistic than it seems, as Kyle Dubas has been rumoured to be okay retaining some salary on Karlsson in order to move him.
As per Marco D'Amico on X:
With former Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas reportedly looking for a "fire sale" and being known for his loyalty to his players, there could be a trade opportunity here between these two teams.
Some believe that Dubas has already hurt the Penguins' aspirations, with many others expressing their displeasure with his moves since joining the team.
As per Spittin' Chiclets on X
While Karlsson may be 34 years old, he's only two years removed from a 100-point season and his third Norris Trophy as the NHL's best defenseman.
Though Rielly has long been a valued player for the Leafs, with trade rumours surrounding the defenseman, it might be time for a shake-up in Toronto. Perhaps there's no better player to pivot away from Rielly for than Erik Karlsson.
