Last week, reports surfaced that the Washington Capitals could be looking at making a coaching change in the off-season which would send current Head Coach Peter Laviolette into free agency. A report from ESPN's Emily Kaplan indicated that the Capitals have current Leafs assistant coach Spencer Carbery at or near the top of their list of potential candidates.

Carbery is no stranger to the Capitals' as he was the head coach of their AHL affiliate in Hershey from 2018 to 2021 before joining the Leafs as an assistant coach in July of 2021. Carbery is most known for his work with the Leafs' powerplay, which has been in the top 3 in the league since he joined the team. Prior to his arrival ahead of the 2021/2022 season, the Leafs' powerplay was ranked 16th in the league. Last season, they held the best powerplay in the league, which operated at 27.3% and this season they currently rank third, operating at 25.2%.

Following the 3-2 overtime loss to Florida where the Leafs ironically went 0 for 4 on the powerplay, Sheldon Keefe was asked about Carbery and his potential and predicts that he will be a head coach very soon.

"A tremendous coach that works very hard & won't be long before he's answering these questions," said Keefe who also credited Carbery for getting the most out of the Leafs' Core 4 while on the man advantage.
