The head coach when posed questions on Aube-Kubel said that "we really like the player, it hasn't worked out for him the way we had foreseen... He has not played to his own expectations. We do like the player and we'll have to see (the waiver process) shakes out today."
Aube-Kubel was placed on waivers last year by the Philadelphia Flyers before being claimed by the eventual Stanley Cup champions in the Colorado Avalanche. The former second round pick had 28 points in 102 games in parts of 4 seasons with the Flyers but his incessant minor penalties drove then-head-coach Alain Vigneault and the Flyers mad so they decided to place him on waivers.
He was picked up quickly by the Avalanche and scored 11 goals and 22 points in 67 regular season games but when pointless in 14 games during the playoffs. He was signed by the Maple Leafs and seemingly fit a perfect role for their bottom 6 - a team that always wanted a little sandpaper element.
He went pointless in 6 games, was a minus 1, and averaged 9:05 TOI. It remains to be seen if he will be picked up by another team but he is a serviceable player, brings a sandpaper element that most teams want, can score when given the opportunity, and is still only 26 years old.
