Since returning from an injury that kept him out for 8 months, Woll has won all 11 games he has appeared in for the Marlies. Through that time, he has posted a 2.55 goals against average and an impressive 0.925 save percentage.
Joseph Woll was originally drafted in the 3rd round (62nd overall) of the 2016 NHL entry draft (the same year Matthews was drafted). Woll spent the following 3 seasons at Boston College, posting an impressive 0.919 save percentage in his final season there. He joined the Toronto Marlies in the 2019-20 season. Last year, he made his NHL debut, playing 4 games for the Leafs. He won 3 of those games, and recorded 1 shutout.
And while Ilya Samsonov and Matt Murray have been providing the Maple Leafs with good goaltending this season, given his performances he is putting on in the minors, one has to wonder if we will see Joseph Woll in the NHL sooner than later, especially with the way he's been playing.
It wouldn't be all that shocking to see Woll earn a look in the event of an injury at the NHL level over a guy like Kallgren, who many assume has leapfrogged Woll as #3 on the Leafs' G depth chart. The fact that Woll has played so well after missing so much time is just a testament to his incredible work ethic and overall skill. We're starting to get excited about this kid.
