Per Eklund of the popular rumour site HockeyBuzz.com, the Flames and Leafs began discussing a potential blockbuster trade a few weeks ago. Some of the potential names in Toronto that have emerged from his sources were William Nylander, Matthew Knies and Timothy Liljegren. On Calgary's end, the names Noah Hanifin and Andrew Mangiapane were mentioned. Eklund was quick to mention that the deal would not contain all of the abovementioned players - but perhaps some.
Naturally, with the Leafs still being approximately $3M over the salary cap and the Flames hovering right around the salary cap, you'd have to assume that any potential deal being worked on between the Flames and the Leafs would have to be a minor one.
Needless to say, rumours often equate to nothing in reality, so this could all be moot. However, since the offseason is such a slow and dragging time of the year, there's nothing wrong with at least discussing the possibilities when a rumour does arise. We know that Treliving spent 9 years with the Flames organization. I'm sure there are some players that he'd love to bring over. However, for now, all we can do is just sit, wait, wonder and kill time until camp opens up next week.
