Joyce was reportedly in the final year of his current deal with the Leafs and had been with the organization since October of 2020. As Johnston reported, the decision to split was mutual and will allow Joyce to have the opportunity to continue to advance in his career.
The Leafs have previously used departing executives as an opportunity to promote from within the organization, so we'll see if that's the case again following Joyce's departure. Having said that, when it comes to pro scouting, having an experienced body in that position can certainly go a long way. With Kyle Dubas putting such a large emphasis on drafting and development, I'd imagine he'll take his time to ensure he brings in the right person for the job.
