If there is a silver lining to Matt Murray's unfortunate abductor injury, it's that the Leafs were able to place his $4.687M cap hit on LTIR. This allowed them to expand their active roster from 20 to 23 players. With just 20 on the roster to start the season, an injury would have meant playing a game short a man before being allowed to recall a player on an emergency basis. Not exactly an ideal situation with a long western road trip coming up that runs from Winnipeg all the way to California.

Today, the Leafs announced they had called up Nick Robertson, Wayne Simmonds and Victor Mete. These three were all listed as likely call up options in our earlier piece. Robertson should have been with the big club from the start after a fantastic pre-season, but because of his waiver exempt status, he was sent down. Simmonds just couldn't crack the 20-man roster with the Leafs faster, younger bottom 6 this season, but the veteran deserves to be up with the big club. Mete also makes sense, as he's the best option the Leafs have should one of their top 6 defensemen need a night off.

You can expect to see Robertson get into the lineup at the earliest opportunity. Not only has he earned it, but the 2nd power play unit desperately needs a shot like his to be dangerous. Simmonds and Mete will likely be in the press box unless an injury occurs or Keefe feels the need to send a message to one of his starters.
